WHAT’S THE TEST OF A GOOD ROOF?

In three words: Time and Storms... All Roofing Services has been successfully operating since 2009 and we have completed literally thousands of roof repairs and replacements in the past 14 years. In that time we have had some seriously challenging weather conditions, from prolonged rain periods (such as the whole of 2022) and some intense east coast lows that can really test the best roofs! These conditions do interesting things to the roof repair and replacement market in general. Firstly, it does create a lot of demand as weak, old or faulty areas of your roof get found out, which of course results in calls to your "go-to roofer" or whomever you can get out if they are too busy. The "whomever you can get" is a bit pot luck though, as there's a fair chance that if they are not flat-out busy during these periods, that is for good reason. They are either new to the game or they do not do good-quality work and so have little business. After Covid lockdowns and during the extremely wet year last year, I noticed more and more roofing contractors popping up to meet a very high demand. Many roofers felt the timing was right to go out on their own and do their own business, and many have done well, but the real test is yet to come for not only them, but also the consumers that have used the new contractor in town, unfortunately. The dry year we are having now is making things competitive again and market conditions are back to more of a "normal" (whatever that is). The [...]

Colorbond Roofs for Australian Homes

Colorbond steel is an Australian product created by Bluescope steel. It has a zinc & aluminium coating which is then covered in polyester and given a baked-on paint that doesn't chip or crack and it comes in a wide variety of colours. Cockatoos Destroy Roof

Yesterday I was called out to look at a roof in Balmain. The neighbours had been complaining that parts of it were landing in their property! On investigation I found that the rear part of the house had been renovated and an imitation type slate material had been used for the roof. It was quite light weight and not a common material for roofing in Australia. And I know why, cockatoos had been pulling it apart, literally shredding it and it was blowing all over the neighbourhood in heavy wind. Should have stuck with the tried and tested; Colorbond, Tile or real Slate ! Another good reason to get a Colorbond roof... Besides the obvious reasons why a Colorbond roof is better than tile; (namely superior hail resistance and less weight on the structure of the house) I discovered another reason the other day: When a possum gets trapped inside a tile roof, it will push its way out, dislodging the tiles. Most of the time the home owner will not even know there is a problem... Until the next heavy rain that is.   Read More: Mould and Roof Leaks Roof and gutter care over winter Why businesses trust us with asbestos removal History of asbestos in Australia Why chose us for your commercial roofing project The advantages of re-roofing your home

Guttering Sydney

Poor guttering causes more problems in Sydney than any other roofing component. Sydney experiences extremely heavy rain from time to time and unless you have very well designed and installed guttering – you can have a big problem. Overflowing gutters due to blockages, not enough downpipes or simply too much catchment area for the size of gutter can make a real mess. Box gutters are the worst offenders. Box gutters are called box gutters as they are “boxed in”. In other words – unless they have been installed with sufficient overflow capacity (and into a suitable place) when a box gutter overflows – it nearly always causes damage to the inside of your home or premises. Eave gutters are the most common type of gutters on Sydney homes and in theory, as they are on the outside edge of your roof they should not cause too much damage when they overflow. However, if they have not been installed correctly they can also cause significant damage as the water can get into the eave or into the wall. Sometimes this shows up as rising damp or even causes problems with the foundations of the home. At All Roofing Services we take a lot of care in our roof maintenance and whist we are not Hydraulic engineers, we can advise you from experience on what will work and what will not. There are many different solutions to guttering problems including More downpipes, larger gutters, specially designed flashings, overflow outlets, correct fall on the gutter, gutter guard, sumps and rainwater heads. There is nearly always a solution to an overflowing gutter problem. Having [...]

Why A Roof Inspection Is Important?

Having your roof inspected is an essential part of your overall household maintenance. It’s something which is often overlooked or ignored until there is internal damage at which point the Insurance Company will tell you that it won’t cover any roof repairs as the roof has not been regularly maintained. Organizing an inspection can save you a lot of money and hassle in the long run and is worth doing regularly. WHY YOU NEED REGULAR ROOF INSPECTIONS Here are the main reasons why it’s essential to keep on top of inspections and roof maintenance: Roofs that aren’t maintained will cause leaks and costly damage to the contents of your house. If sudden severe weather occurs, such as storms, high winds, and hail, your house is likely to suffer. Your insurance company may not pay out for damage from leaking roofs until you have had the roof fixed at your own expense if you have not had regular inspections and maintenance done. Any loose tiles or other parts of the roof which can become loose may cause danger to passers-by if they slip off or go flying during windy weather. Catching a problem early means you only need to have minimal work done, but if you leave it untended, you could end up with a much bigger and more expensive roof repair. WHAT YOU NEED TO CONSIDER If you’re not sure when to organize a roofing inspection, here’s what you need to consider: On self-inspection, are there any visible signs of damage or leaks that need immediate repair? Also, check for debris and blocked gutters that might need clearing either by [...]

Don’t ignore the leak…

The number of people requesting a Free Quote over the last few days has "gone through the roof".  We are working to get to each one but there maybe a little delay. Often a roof will seem to be leaking, when actually it is the run off from an over full gutter backing up into the house. Replacing your roof will give you the certainty of leak-free protection from the rain.  Restoring your roof includes fixing any leaks or cracked tiles that may exist, and then doing the restoration.  Again, leak free protection from the rain. The most important thing is not to ignore the leak even when the rain stops - From our experience it only gets worse!   Read More Who to choose to fix your roof? Mould and Roof Leaks

We often get asked to look at mould problems, particularly toward the end of winter. Mould will grow when the ceiling or wall is damp from condensation or a roof leak and stays damp for a period of a few days or more. In Sydney we had a very wet week back in July. South facing walls or other parts of the house that stayed damp were prone to mould growth. Most of the mould I looked at was not caused by a roof leak. "Roof leak" mould tends to be in isolated spot and usually causes some minor damage to the ceiling as the drip from the roof works its way through the ceiling. Condensation type mould usually starts as spotty over a wider area and can quickly spread and become heavier. Ceilings can become completely covered in this mould and in this situation it is almost never a roof leak that is causing the mould to grow.
